There were none of the ugly scenes that dominated the headlines seven months ago when this two teams met but it was still a fiery contest when the Shooting Stars of Ibadan welcomed Lagos outfit, MFM FC into the main bowl of the Lekan Salami stadium on Wednesday evening.

Having lost their last match while away at Kano Pillars on Match Day Three (which is some kind of improvement if you consider the thorough 'yanshing' we got last time around. Okay. It was 6-0!), and to Sunshine Stars before that, you could understand why many 3SC’s supporters were quite anxious for the club to get back on track with a better result here. First Team Coach, Taiwo Amoo must have echoed the same sentiments to his boys before the game as his Shooting Stars side started the half with purpose and should have been at least a goal up at halftime but surprisingly, it was MFM FC who ended up delivering the ultimate sucker punch. Sikiru Olatunbosun’s right footed effort deep into the half gave the Olukoya Boys a shock lead and left the Oluyole Warriors with little time to regroup before the referees whistle called for the break.

The second half began with real purpose from the 3SC who draw smart saves from Ospino Egbe in the first 20 minutes of the half. It pretty much continued the same way but the home team kept letting themselves down with bad decision after bad decision when in front of goal. It also didn’t help that the MFM defenders were built like Eleyele Hill and were extra motivated to inflict a damaging result to their close town rivals, much to the chagrin of the home supporters who were beginning to let their displeasure show with frustrated groans and sighs.

Just when the crowd thought the breakthrough would never come, 3SC finally found the back of the net after a careless mistake in the 89th minute from the MFM defence won us a penalty kick. Up stepped Abayomi Adebayo who duly dispatched goalkeeper Egbe the wrong way.

For the home fans, it was one of those results that you don’t entirely fancy but half a bean cake they say is better than none. Coach Amoo wasn’t entirely happy either especially with his strikers whose poor finishing all evening was pretty much responsible for the result. Real credit however should go the the MFM defenders, all eleven of them.

The Shooting Stars will now travel to Ilorin to take on Abubakar Bukola Saraki FC on Sunday, 29th January. See you there!
